People of TALES – Meet Nicolò Belgiovine

  • Could you tell us a few words about your background? I was born in a small city in south Italy where my passion for Astronomy developed during my high school years. Once the moment to chose my future career path came, I decided to move to Padova, one of the best Universities in Italy and one of the few offering an Astronomy course at a bachelor’s level. After my bachelor’s degree I continued my studies, always in Padova, with a master’s degree in Astrophysics and Cosmology. During this master I had the luck of participating in an Erasmus Internship experience in Groningen (Netherlands) where I worked on my master’s thesis project on Quasi Periodic Oscillations in Low Mass X-Ray Binaries. Today I am a Doctorate Candidate for the TALES Network at the University of Crete.

  • What is the most exciting thing about your job ? Put in a very simple way, the sense of amazement and discovery. Astronomy is one of the oldest science to ever exist, and yet it feels like every day we are learning something new. I feel so lucky to be able to share my knowledge and at the same time discuss with some of the best experts in the field on a daily basis.
  • Why did you choose to become a scientist ? I’d say my choice to become a scientist is driven by the idea of being able to contribute to this immense puzzle that is the Universe, even if with one small piece.
  • What is the main focus of your PhD project ? My PhD project revolves around the study of the innermost part of Active Galactic Nuclei, called AGN. Through the use of several X-ray telescopes (XMM-Newton, Suzaku and NuStar) we study the delay of the variability in these sources between different energy bands.

  • What do you do for fun? My main hobby is photography. I love exploring nature and cities, and taking nice pictures while doing so.
